I've done some more testing and it seems to be the RAM related. I had 2 x 2GB sticks (DDR 2 800, PC 6400) installed in ganged mode. Removing the stick closest to the front of the machine makes the machine stable again- it's runs happily at full load for extended periods and continuously for 2 days
