Public bug reported:
Binary package hint: gnome-screensaver
If I'm playing video/DVDs with VLC, or digital TV with Kaffeine under
Ubuntu 9.10 in full-screen, Gnome-screensaver will kick in after the set
idle time. This doesn't happen with Totem.

I'm seeing exactly the same issue on my Dell Latitude D400 with Intel
855GM graphics on a clean install of Hardy. The laptop completely
freezes with a blank screen and nothing can be done but force a hard
power-down. Forcing X.org to use the i810 driver by editing xorg.conf

This bug has been resolved for me by removing an old version of cairo
libraries I had complied myself ages ago under Feisty and were stored in
/usr/local/lib. Again, see bug 149051.
Both these bugs can be closed but I don't know how to close a bug? Mark
it as invalid in this case?

Yes, good catch. I had a local copy of cairo, I was using for
development ages ago. I've removed it now and update-manager works
without crashing. Bug 149082 is sorted also due to the same problem, so
both can be closed.

Reading around a bit more, is this (and the other similar application
crashes I've been seeing and reporting) related to the new nvidia
driver? Can this be identified?

noticed it significantly degrading application performance. OpenOffice
