about 4 times in different ways before I
worked out what was happening. In each case the wirless was working
fine in live-cd mode, only failing in the desktop install. Once I'd
worked it out I just booted the live cd and copied /etc/pcmcia/* into
/etc/pcmcia on the hard drive.

I just installed xubuntu on my laptop and though wireless was working fine from
the livecd, it failed to find the pcmcia card when booted from the harddisk.
This was ue to there being no config.opts in /etc/pcmcia on the installed copy.
