I experienced this issue (or something similar) yesterday. I used the
alt-sysrq-1 and alt-sysrq-t combo mentioned in the document linked to in
the last comment and after sometime the machine started responding
again. I captured the kern.log and will attach it here in case it's

Quite frequently when I lock my screen (or it locks itself) and I unlock
it the system is responsive for a few seconds but then completely
freezes. I can't reboot but have to turn off the power on the machine.

options. I then click save and nothing happens (I don't get a
confirmation). If I restart the config again, indeed nothing has been

After some work on this, I have concluded that this is a duplicate of
bug 66702. I think the nxclient/nxserver errors were unrelated to the
mysql error. I was able to get rid of the nxclient/nxserver following
the directions for removing jedit after synaptic fails that I came

I am seeing a similar problem with a ATI Radeon X600 card. I cannot
perform the install due to the X failure.
The failure results in two X log screens -- one contains the message "no
screens found" and the other has this:

I was able to fix this issue by removing resolver completely and then
reinstalling. So simply updating does not help.

I experienced this problem again and discovered I'd be dropped into
busybox after a wait. I receive this error: ALERT! /dev/sda1 does not
exist. Dropping to shell!
If someone could give me some suggestions on commands to run to produce
diagnostic info, I'd appreciate it.
