Installing the proprietary driver (NVIDIA binary driver version 340.76)
indeed eliminates the 'white' background image on lightdm-gtk-greeter.
Switching back to Nouveau also turns the background 'white'.

On further recollection (when changing my lightdm-gtk-greeter.conf
file), I remembered I set the active-monitor param as a long-shot based
on bug 1426664, which did nothing.

After my system boots, the lightdm-gtk-greeter fails to load the
wallpaper, instead leaving a 'white' screen. ALL other aspects load
(icons, indicators, clock, login box) show, but the background does not.
