cannot get gcc working after upgrade from 8.04 to 8.10

Binary package hint: gcc-4.3
After upgrading from 8.04 to 8.10 with the alternate CD, I cannot
compile anything. It seems that somehow, packages gcc-4.3 and cpp-4.3
are conflicting during installation.
