I click the volume control gnome applet and select the "Volume Control..."
button. This runs gnome-volume-control and not gnome-sound-properties.
System -> Preferences -> Sound indeed run
Yes, I just rechecked.
I have the latest package version installed (still 2.26.0-0ubuntu3).
If it matters, this is a system upgraded from intrepid, not a new
install.
BTW, why was the package changed from gnome-media to gnome-control-center?

This just happened twice to me. I wasn't doing anything particular when
the "report crash" pop-up came up.
I was connected to a WPA-protected AP.
iwconfig still showed me as connected, but DNS and HTTP didn't work.
Workaround:
sudo /etc/init.d/NetworkManager restart
