If the issue doesn't affect hirsute then it should be possible to update
an impish system by chroot from hirsute media, I would think.
I've been booting up only occasionally this past week when I need to
access something, but I find that apt, or possibly initramfs, updates
seem to trigger the issu

work to fix from a chroot or is the fix in the userland tools such that
a chroot from hirsute would not help due to an issue in the userland ZFS

This makes a world of difference. It seems to make the Headphone volume
control the bottom speakers while the Speaker volume still controls the
top speaker.

It seems the desktop environments are missing something about informing

ubuntu has been converted to an upstart job and I don't see any script
that rm's the /failed directory. I must admit I'm a bit afraid to nuke
/dev/.udev/ so I can't test what happens if I try.

I can confirm this behavior on Kubuntu Karmic 9.10. Installed around

I tried 'emacs -nw' and the menus do work that way.

I think this needs to be re-opened (and renamed).
My upgrade today pulled down version 2.6.31-2.16 of linux-image-generic and
this problem came back on boot.
I solved it by deleting /dev/null and recreating it with `mknod -m666 /dev/null
char 1 3`.

I have the same problem. EMU 0404 USB worked flawlessly in intrepid,
even with PulseAudio.
Now, the card works fine without pulseaudio (for example `aplay -Dplughw:1
wavefile.wav` works).
However, with pulseaudio, there is static and noise only and after a few
seconds of playback pulseaudio dies
I recently installed a 2.6.28 kernel I built myself and it completely
fixed the problem for me.
My guess is that the problem is upstream in the kernel, if not the
uvcvideo module than something related. In any case, probably not much
that can be done about it on the ubuntu end.
