If I can add my 2 cents, with my Radeon 9200SE setting the color depth
to 16 solves it. Animation performance are terrible, anyway, much worse
than on Jaunty.

I second this. Being an anime fan, this can be very annoing, for
instance when two conversation are going at the same time, or a japanese
sign is being translated, and at the same time someone is speaking,
totem just shows one subtitle, dropping the others.

Trying to run from a terminal I get a popup (a graphical one) saying:

means that preferences and other settings can't be save
