Had the same error message installing Ubuntu 20.04.1. Following Alexei
Lozovsky's advice above, I made my EFI partition the first partition on
the disk, and also made it a primary partition as opposed to a Logical
partition within an extended partition, and the installation completed
successfully.

@Tom Reynolds,
when I use dis_ucode_ldr as a kernel boot parameter, booting and shutdown work
fine.
Whether or not I also add mitigations=off or mds=off does not matter.
Tested five times with 4.4.0-154.
The older kernel 4.4.0-146 boots fine without special parameters, but
hangs on shutdown.

I'm not sure about wrapping of spaces. Of cause an editor, which wraps
at the window edge, will put the spaces to the new line. But Word and
OpenOffice.org had always wrapped so, that the first non-space content
is at the starting of the next line. I haven't got Wordperfect and have
not used Latex.
I think it is a deficit in the UI, that spaces in the margin are not
shown. Word shows all spaces, SoftMaker shows one space in the margin.

@Norbert X: This bug is really fixed. This bug is about selecting _two
shapes_.
Your problem is to select an image together with a shape. The underlying
reason is the same as for selecting two images. And that is bug 34438.

That is a problem with the old ppt format. For pptx the behavior is
correct. Not sure whether developers should repair import/export filter
for legacy file formats.

Shift + Click does not work for selecting an image (or picture or bitmap)
together with shapes or other images, because an image in Writer is no drawing
object. So you can not make multiple selection with images.

My workaround:
1. clearing the Desktop Manager field in the LXSession configuration, as

This makes the desktop disfunctional, without icons.
To solve this I tried two things:

The attached icons show a placeholder instead of a sigma.
Making new icons would be a task for the design team.
