just upgraded to 12.04. by default it had me booting into regular unity.
clicked the ubuntu icon at the login screen. updated to unity2d. running
fine. this bug should be closed due to easy procedure.

thank you. please know i am appreciative of the efforts and time spent
considering this issue.
if there are changes made in hardware platform detection determination
that the ubuntu team need me to test, please let me know. i would rather
run 12.04 and provide feedback on the new unity environmen
the performance was so degraded that i have switched back to 11.10. it
did take a considerable time to upgrade to 12.04 to downgrade to 11.10
with a fresh install.

I am running mint 12 with a slightly newer ubuntu kernel. this crash
does not happen with this kernel. if this is a kernel bug, it no longer
occurs with this kernel.

if i remove the conf file, all i get is 640x480 resolution with 8 bit
color depth which can not be changed. i have other installations which
