I have the same problem using an apple airport express as AP. In my case the problem is clearly related to distance to the AP and signal strength. If I am close to the AP (say 5 m), there is never any problem. At 15 m, download rate suddenly drops to 100 kB / s. In that case, iwconfig reports "L
