Sorry, forgot about this one.
I switched to wicd, and the problem no longer occurred. (And wicd
provides a nice "no X-server needed" WiFi connection interface.)
Also, IIRC, that was an older kernel used in the Jaunty alpha release.
Anyhow, as far as I'm concerned, it's no longer a problem.

First, the ath5k madwifi driver does not work for the AR5424 chipset on
an x86_64 kernel, so I've been using the madwifi-0.10.5.6 snapshot. That
driver has been working quite well on all the 2.6.28 kernels from the
Jaunty development tree until the latest release, 2.6.28-11.
This problem seems to have been fixed in kernel 2.6.28-7 in the Jaunty
development tree.
