Using a debootstrap installed hardy I am able to run the frame buffer with
vga=788 in VirtualBox.
The console switching problem still exists, but typing
setupcon
blindly in a tty restores it. There appears to be a problem with the

This may be rather complex, but I think on Feisty there is some problem
with priorities for the engine settings.
With w32codecs installed, and libxine-extracodecs installed, gxine
insists on trying to use ffmpeg for Real media. When the ffmpeg audio
priority is reduced to -1 and win32a set to 2 ,
