Same issue here. Kmail just dies. Copy/pasting via another applications
doesn't help.
Using "Paste as Quotation" works.
Don't know if this is a ubuntu bug only [1], but there's been some
patches added lately.
Perhaps bump up the importance level a notch?

I know, not the most important bug to fix, but just a simple "/" as
Christal noted.
Here is a patch to help however gets assigned this insignificant bug on
their way.
