Just happened again. I have attached the Xorg.0.log which should
contain some helpful information. I did have to press Cntl Alt F1
followed by Cntl Alt F7 in order to get back to the System Log viewer.
Some of the entries in the Xorg.0.log file will contain this sequence.

I am running Ubuntu Hardy Heron and using an ATI video card (ATI Technologies
Inc RV350 AP [Radeon 9600]). This never happened in Feisty/Beryl and I have not
tried Gutsy. Compiz is turned on but I am not certain that this is causing the
issue. Kernel - Linux ubuntu
