By "I renamed it to ~/.gnome2/session.bak" I meant to say "I renamed the
file ~/.gnome2/session to ~/.gnome2/session.bak" -- I did not rename the
entire directory. Sorry about any confusion that my original wording may

Curiously, the file ~/.gnome2/session was not visible when I was in Safe
GNOME mode. Perhaps it's only generated after a regular login. I had to
log into a regular session first, to see this file. I also had to do
View > Show Hidden Files in the Nautilus File Browser to see

Workplace Switcher applet, or the main pair of Panels?
I had tried to re-add the Workplace Switcher applet in regular mode, as
described above, but I did not see any results. So I tried again, with
zero results. In Safe GNOME mode,
Logging in using Failsafe GNOME mode seems to solve most of the
problems. I had to remove the extra Workplace Switcher applets from the
Bottom Panel, and then things seemed to be right back to normal.

The closed-source video driver is for ATI. I have a relatively new Dell
computer, so I think the ATI card is a recent one, and the current
driver is used (not the legacy one). I've tried to copy and paste the
version number, but i cannot paste it into this Firefox window.

Trying to add Workplace Switcher Applet to the bottom panel does nothing
-- no applet is displayed there.
The only way to close an application is using File > Quit, again because
the window borders or frames are missing around applications.
