I'm attempring to upgrade from Ubuntu 14.04 to 16.04, after Mattia
Rizzolo pointed out to me that 16.04 is OK for 32-bit machines.
The message from Distribution Upggrade was
Could not calculate the upgrade
An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade.

thank for your prompt response; I checked /usr/bin/python, and ls -l
python* shows me

I'm using Ubuntu 14.04, on a 32-bit computer.
I had Inkscape installed, and attempted to use Synaptic to remove it.
(I intended to install Inkscape again, so as to have the latest version.
The uninstall failed, with the Summary message above.

When I try to launch alacarte from the menus or from the command line I get
