This is not a duplicate issue of bug #1611737 (ROS packages). It is not
even presenting the same error message. It is a libappstream issue.

Got a nice freeze during aptitude upgrade and was forced to restart my
server and play with dpkg/apt to fix this.

I get the same on two machines, one with Ubuntu 12.10 Qantal Qetzal and
another with Linux Mint 14 MATE. It's simply impossible to enter text in
Gimp 2.8.2. When you try to select a font, the application will
immediately crash.

Sorry to say that it was urgent work and i was forced to install debian
instead of Ubuntu so unable to send you log. Debain worked pretty well on
same machine.
