I've installed 304.43 on my Ubuntu 12.04 (Gnome-Shell) with Nvidia 8800
GT and experienced no crashes for whole week so it looks like this bug
is really fixed in this driver release.

I can confirm that moving to 290.10 solved the problem (at least for me
- 8800 GT).

Currently I'm using kernel 2.6.32.9 (http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-
ppa/mainline/v2.6.32.9/) and it seems to work fine. The bug I've
reported affects the official Ubuntu release (9.10) only. Other kernels
downloaded from kernel.ubuntu.com worked fine (at least for me).

Overall system's performance under high CPU load significantly degrades
on Ubuntu 9.10 RC karmic. For example during compilation of source code
on all CPUs/cores all system's responses are very slow and the system is
nearly unusable. The problem occurs only with kernel shipped
