I have the CanonScan LiDE 60 Scanner which I've had for a very long
time. The SimpleScan software always worked great out of the box with
this scanner...until I upgraded to Ubuntu 20.04. And now, neither the
brightness nor the contrast sliders have any effects on my scans.

This was fixed by using System76's modified nvidia driver.
sudo apt-add-repository -y ppa:system76-dev/stable
sudo apt update
sudo apt install system76-driver system76-driver-nvidia

Hmm, I just reinstalled Linux Mint 16 along side of Windows 7 and the
problem is fixed. I looked inside /etc/default/grub and here are the
contents:
