I just realized that I didnt write that I did not select 'wobbly windows', nor did I select 'workspaces on a cube'. Just for the heck of it I selected 'wobbly windows', and the problem seems to be gone. That is, the titlebar never went greyed out and unselectable when I turned on wobbly windows.
