[IMPACT]
Any time git merge is called from a script, the script may hang
indefinitely. I would imagine that the number of git-users that have
written scripts that in turn calls git is fairly large.
[Regression potential]
The solution that I recommend is to upgrade Ubuntu 12.04 to the next
micro-
I compiled git version 1.7.9.6 from source and reran the testcase in
comment #3. The bug has been fixed in that version.

When I upgraded my virtual host to karmic, autofs stopped working
because of this bug, which meant that the host didn't work at all. The
diff in comment #2 also shows nfs missing, which probably means that A
LOT of virtual hosts will break due to this bug. This is a very serious
bug.
A workaround
I have the same alternating latency problem on my Thinkpad T60. It uses
the e1000 driver as well. When I ping the Thinkpad from another host on
my local network, the ping-times alternate between one second and a few
