to go about debugging the kde4 application launcher.
In addition, the following errors are logged to auth.log:

... the solution for your menus is to either install the 'menus' package and
run 'update-menus' (which will give you a debian menu) or remove the
/etc/xdg/menus/debian-menu.menu file.
