I get the same error message as tilo kremer. Note that this only occurs
in update-manager; running "apt-get update" from the command line works
fine. Also, $HOME and the git configs are set both for normal user and
root.
Using a german locale an zsh, if that's got anything to do with it.

I can confirm this exact same behaviour. White static on a 1920x1200
resolution, doesn't happen in 1680x1050, 1600x1200 or below. Doesn't
happen either on Intrepid + fglrx, or Windows XP. Since I also have the
"flickering" bug (sometimes, screen switches off for one second), I
tested if the CPU fre
Oh, forgot to add: I'm using xfwm4 (XFCE's window manager), and
switching off the composite effects in the window manager (without
changing the xorg.conf) also resolves this problem for me.

I can confirm this bug. After the last kernel update, compiz goes from
the login screen directly to a completely white screen. Effects are
still working (e.g. if I press Alt+F4, I can see the closing-window-
animation), but no window contents are visible.

Yes, same with me. And I also have the nVidia TNT2 and the nvidia-glx-
legacy kernel, so this should be the cause.
