I found the cause of this problem, which is a bug in Ubuntu only to
Windows 2000, XP, FreeBSD/PC-BSD all install correctly on this machine.

known OK. Trying to install on new machine with Gigabyte 880GM-UD2H
motherboard and Athlon II X2. HDD has 2 partitions specified in the
install as / and /home.
