The /etc/hosts or ~/.ssh/config workaround didn't work from me (I
primarily used mDNS/Bonjour name resolution). However, I found this
error report in ~/.xsession-errors:

Well, I gave up about it and reinstalled my system to 9.04. Yes, it was
somewhat similar to bug 399950, but I didn't have any problems with HDD
space though. As far this bug concerns me, it can be closed...

I skipped trying to install Firefox2 and installed Ubuntu 8.10 while
keeping the /home partition from my previous install on 8.04.1. That
didn't help Firefox at all. It's still unusable, has no bookmars, keeps
no history (e.g. "back" button doesn't work). Could it be that FF app

Mozilla had an ad in NYT in 2004 when they released Firefox 1.0, funded
by donations FF users. I don't know how much did this add to the actual
usage, but in my country there was no ad and we're supposed to be
leading one of the leading countries in Europe (in Slovenia above 50%
users are using FF)

I can't really say why it happened but all my bookmarks have been
deleted without my intervention. Also, the behaviour of a default
browser is broken.
