I have the same issue on 16.04, but it appears my kernels are WAY behind
what you guys have - 4.4.0-170-generic.
Anyway, for those who don't want to mess with kerls changes or blanket
system updates yet, I found a feasible workaround that works for me:

This is obviously long past the most recent thread activity, but just in
case people fall on this page, I had this problem, as well as with
evince-thumbnailer.
It turned out to be a permissions problem in my home folder tree. It
probably came from some activity I had undertaken while sudoed - my b
So coming on 5 years now and still not fixed?
Any chance of it EVER being fixed?

Fully up to date on BIOS and natty-updates but it still hangs.
But I have vastly narrowed it down. If I disable WLAN in the bios, the
stock kernel boots fine. Then, when I try to re-enable it (via Fn+F2)
the system freezes.
So the wireless drivers seem to be at fault.

Interesting addendum - I updated the BIOS to the latest available from
ASUS yesterday - and successfully booted the stock kernel once! Once
only though - I rebooted again and the hang returned.
Not sure that adds anything useful to the report but it was a big
surprise!

After upgrading to 11.04 from 10.10, the netbook hangs in boot. When

scrolled at the hang. Choosing "previous linux versions" from the boot

"Same-here's" are rarely helpful - but I just rebuilt my system with a
Gigabyte H55M-UD2H and i3 560 - and have exactly the same problem. The
OS worked with the old system (Nvidia-based card) but X will not start,
with these same errors, on the new system.

OK, I think I see the problem - it's a painful painful route to get

I think its a different problem - with the system freeze that I am

Having had the same problem in - ahem - Mandriva 2007.1, FF 2.0.0.3 -
with Firefox running, the system freezes quicker and quicker - I
examined this and other reports and, just for kicks, cleared the FF
cache (before FF had done its nasty), and set it to clear after every
close of FF.
