Permissions for $HOME on my system are already set to 755. I know they
would be helpful, but I'm not sure how I could provide reproduction
steps because this happens before I am able to login; maybe someone else
can. I don't have any custom scripts that run when the system boots or
anything like

Happens quite often for me when using Alt+Left and Alt+Right to change
directory in nautilus. nautilus changes directory appropriately, so Alt

Same issue. Couldn't get to console (ctrl+alt+f3) after suspending.
Tried it with console mode enabled and the GDM service stopped and I
still couldn't get back -- just a blank screen (albeit, power was
running through it as well as the rest of the computer).

the files to make them unreachable, e.g., nmblookup to nmblookup.bak, so
I did that and it gave me a new error with a new file, so I moved that
one as well. I repeated this process until apt-get -f install proceeded
