I had the same problem, it solved when changed the option "autodetect" by
"alsa" in:
System -> Preferences -> Sound, on Music & Movies

I just install a clean Ubuntu 7.10 and double click on the default
~/Examples/Experience ubuntu.ogg and I can't see the video, only see
vertical lines "dancing".
The movie it's ok, I install the VLC media player and I can see.
