The latests upgrades did the trick for me (HP Compaq nc6400 with Intel
945GM graphics). The only thing I have to do is to start the computer
using the recovery mode, choose fix the x server and then started OK. It
started without compiz enabled, but when I enabled it everything worked
fine.

I did the same workaround to do the upgrade (including a tzdata update
popt up this weekend): change to other location (America/Asuncion or
American/New_York worked both).

I had the same problem. The workaround I found is:
Make a complete remove in synaptic of gnome-main-menu and libslab
Make a new install
It seems to be related to config because making a plain remove does not
fix it.

I can confirm this bug in Gutsy RC. It is a desktop computer with a
Linksys WMP54G 2.0 PCI Adapter 20 meters away from a Linksys AP. I did
not have this problem in Feisty...
