I had same problem when disabled integrated card in bios. Found issue
report in gdm3 https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gdm/issues/332. Issue

Workaround mentioned in both reports - to change line in gdm
I've same problem with nvidia 960 in combo with intel integrated card.
Even when I disable integrated card in BIOS, it doesn't help, but contrary
making it default helps, but of course then system is using integrated card as
main card.
I tried setting NOMODESET and WaylandEnable=false, but those
I was about to write it's not working but it's actually is with :port
notation.
