For solving the "Hugly" splash screen and the slowdown at startup, it is enough
to add another parameter in the grub config file:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash nomodeset vga=803"
followed, of course, by "update-grub". In this way the resolution is
manually set and the splash screen is
