Tried linux-image-2.6.39-999-generic_2.6.39-999.201104191714_i386.deb from from 2011-04-19-natty and had the same bad behavior. There is only an amd64 kernel in the 2011-04-28-oneiric and this laptop is i386 (VIA C7-M Processor 1200MHz actually) Haven't tried the suggestions in wireless.kernel.
