I don't have my old laptop anymore, so can't test it.
There is some discussion here, though (but might not be exactly the same
problem):

It seems like the bug seems to be quite ATI Radeon Xpress 1250 specific.
Here's also a duplicate with some more useful discussion:

Also when I run Ubuntu 12.04 Beta 1 from a live USB then the sound is
fine, but when I made a clean install onto the HDD then the sound
problem is still there.
This distorted sound issue is also seemingly having effect on the system

For example playing a flash video from Youtube, when it is visible in
the browser window then the distortion is very noticeable, but when I
scroll down so that the video is out of the view, then the distortion is
a lot less pronounced.
Just by scrolling around at any page the distortion gets worse
When I boot up with Unity 3D, then for some time the sound seems OK. But
as I launch programs or use some graphics effects (like SUPER+W), then
the sound is immediately distorted and remains that way.
I can't seem to trigger the sound to go nuts in Unity 2D mode.

I can confirm that this behaviour still occurs with Ubuntu 11.10 Unity

I was having this problem too in Ubuntu 3D mode, but when I lost the top

My xpress 1250 started to work with KMS with the latest kernel (2.6.35
RC1) (haven't tried 2.6.33 nor 2.6.34, though). There were some issues
though - glxgears (or games like AlienArena) showed artifacts (and one
maybe not related to graphics card - wifi didn't connect very well).
