Neither `ip link show` nor `dmesg` produce any outputs when the NetworkManager is unresponsive. Both commands hang up the command line. I never seen `dmesg` behaving like this before. I am attaching the output of `dmesg` obtained after rebooting the system. Just in case that is useful. Thank you.

Hello everyone, Just to report that I bumped into this same bug upgrading from 10.04 to 10.10 with a VAIO VGN-FW31ZJ. After purging the xserver-xorg-video-nouveau package I was able to start the upgrade (downloading new packages right now). Will see how the machine behaves when its finished. Bes
