Neither `ip link show` nor `dmesg` produce any outputs when the
NetworkManager is unresponsive. Both commands hang up the command line.
I never seen `dmesg` behaving like this before.

bit more carefully I found a huge icon for pgAdmin this is possibly
messing up the Process Name column (attachment below).
Eventually, this might all boil down to an icon scaling method failing.

battery discharge rate is dramatically down, about half of what it is
with kernel 3.13 (~ 15W), but still above what it was with Ubuntu 12.04.

10.10 with a VAIO VGN-FW31ZJ.
After purging the xserver-xorg-video-nouveau package I was able to start
the upgrade (downloading new packages right now). Will see how the
machine behaves when its finished.
