I can't reproduce the drawing issue with metacity --replace either. I
haven't yet tried it under KDE 4 with desktop effects enabled.
I did, however, try compiling the latest R from source. It required
libxt-dev (which I got from the 9.10 repositories), but it had the same
problem under compiz.
I can confirm this behavior on an x86_64 build, but an otherwise similar
setup. I'm running the Ubuntu 9.10 version of the Intel graphics
driver on a "GM965/GL960" controller.
I did try making an exception for the window decoration and shadows for
the R Data Editor window, but the problem persis
I'm not sure if the kwin crash while enabling a second monitor is
related to the original problem. Nonetheless, I can confirm it with
Kubuntu 8.10 using the intel driver on a 965GM (X3100) graphics chip.
My workaround is to kill plasma first, do the xrandr commands, and
reload plasma. If you do t

Harald,
Thanks for looking at this. I'm not sure i understand your comment
about using different fonts - the document has the font (Computer
Modern, the default LaTeX font) embedded in the file. I'm no
typographer, but the font itself is identical to me between those
screenshots; the difference
I just upgraded to Gutsy and the rendering is still poor. I haven't
done a side by side comparison to see if it was better than Feisty (it
might be slightly better), but it still looks inferior to kpdf on FC6,
for example.
I should note that kdvi on a file generated by LaTeX file looks great
(and
I'd just like to add that that this occurs on more than the nvidia
binary driver. I'm running Feisty on a laptop with Intel graphics (955
chipset) running the i810 driver. PDF rendering via kpdf is still poor
on this setup.

Yo
My problem was similar to those here: shutdown from kdm works, shutdown
from within a KDE session does not (freezing on Kubuntu splash screen).
I can also confirm that removing usplash (or probably disabling it) is
an easy and basically painless workaround.
My experience differs with some in that
This font problem in kpdf persists even in 6.10. Some files are
probably worse than others, but a very simple PDFLaTeX generated file
will demonstrate the problem. The more the document is zoomed out, the
worse the effect.
