Peter, I used Muon, located the package, and uninstalled. You could also try
apt on command line.
Ex: sudo apt remove backport-iwlwifi-dkms

Title
I removed the backport-iwlwifi-dkms package, and the kernel compiles and
boots. As I read, the driver is part of the kernel now. The package is
not needed.

I have the same issue. It causes kernel panic upon boot. Here is my
backport-iwlwifi make log file.

I found running Unity2D to be a rock solid work around. My desktop is
using an nVidia 9800GT. My notebook is an nVidia Optimus system on a
Dell XPS 17 using Bumblebee for a video driver. I have had no problems
with Bumblebee.
