Turns out this is a known issue in Maverick too. See
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MacBookPro6-2/Maverick#Sensors for
workaround.
Module 'coretemp' needs to be modprobed, as soon as this is done I see
the fans spin up (gradually over, say 2 minutes).

Ok, so your fans are both running at 2400 RPM, so they're definitely
running - at least according to proc. You should be able to barely hear
the fan run if you put your ears close to the top of the keyboard?

I don't see this issue on a fresh install on a MacbookPro 6,2 - with
Ubuntu 11.04 beta 32-bit - I have not changed from the default graphics
driver.

I can't completely reproduce this issue, but I'm running Ubuntu 11.04
(beta) 32-bit. I haven't seen the fan run higher than the min speed,
however so it's possible that the fan control is broken.
Could you paste a copy of the following information?

Same issue with me, sending a pdf or ps to a printer on a headless
server.
* Problem also occurs if scp'ing files and printing locally (i.e. lpr
filename.pdf) - when leaving it (10 mins for a 3-page pdf on a 700MHz
processor, it eventually came out).

I can confirm this, it's been around since alpha1 or alpha2 at least.
Ctrl-L / refresh/ reset also works to fix it.
Compiz is turned off, so that's presumably not the cause.
It happens after every couple of commands, and happens every time I'm in
an xterm.

Hi, This is not a duplicate.
The problem in bug #233913 does not seem to exist on my machine.

The tooltip delay was effective in Feisty, can we get this reverted?
