Which kernel do you use? AFAIK do many people have sound-problems since
the kernel update from xxx-12 to xxx-14...

I am using Feisty Herd 5 (x86) as VirtualMashine in VMWare Workstation (Host
System Ubuntu Edgy 64-Bit). At the moment I am installing. But when I tried to
play an MP3 (to test the "Auto-Codec-Installation-System" and selected the
first codec, I was asked if this is
just a little fix: download "dar" and "libdar3c2a" for DAPPER(!!) from
packages.ubuntu.com (.deb), install them, after that just install kdar
and everything should work perfectly (you can update dar when apt wants
you to)

I had an smimilar problem! Just changed
driver "nv"
to
driver "nvidia"
and everything was OK (Live-CD->ctrl+alt+f1, edit xorg.conf, restart X)

Try to go to the console with "ctrl+alt+f1", edit the xorg.conf (change
nv to nvidia), with ctrl+alt+f7 back to X, restart X with
ctrl+alt+backspace and everything worked for me again
