When I click on the menu for synaptic an icon (starting administrative application) shows on the panel with the other open programs as if it is attempting to run then the icon disappears and nothing more happens (satellite modem connection see below). I can normally repeat this several times. I

After setting my first line in /etc/hosts to "127.0.0.1 localhost ubuntu804.bob" I rebooted. I rebooted because I noticed that sometimes everything works even when the hosts file is changed but not after reboot. After reboot the hosts file was as above.
