Like others I uninstalled xserver-xorg-video-sis to make things work in
Saucy. This is a computer for a non well versed Linux user and I am sure
I will see the coputer back when some upgrade is done. Please fix. This
has to be hurting the Ubuntu and open source reputation.

I would recommend this bug be closed. Recent revisions must have solved
the problem because I no longer have the problem. I am using up to date
version of ubuntu 8.04.

When I click on the menu for synaptic an icon (starting administrative
application) shows on the panel with the other open programs as if it is
attempting to run then the icon disappears and nothing more happens
(satellite modem connection see below). I can normally repeat this
several times. I
After setting my first line in /etc/hosts to "127.0.0.1 localhost
ubuntu804.bob" I rebooted. I rebooted because I noticed that sometimes
everything works even when the hosts file is changed but not after
reboot. After reboot the hosts file was as above. Synaptic would not run

Good news: when I add ubuntu804 to my hosts line 127.0.0.1 synaptic does
work.
Bad news: When GUI network tool network-admin is used to add the domain
bob the first line of the hosts file is changed to "127.0.0.1 localhost
ubuntu804.bob" and synaptic no longer works. The settings probably were

Apparently, I was in error with my last comment that by adding myself to
the root group synaptic started to work. Something else I did must have
started it working but I really don't know what. It appears that once it
starts working then it continues to work until I reboot.

Sorry for taking so long to get this. In the mean time I set myself as a
user for root and synaptic and update-manager now work. Is this
inappropriate or dangerous? The gnuenterprise line was put in recently
for some troubleshooting. My /etc/hosts file has:
127.0.0.1 localhost
#70.158.36.94 www.gn
I get this when sudo synaptic and gksu which is the command I get from
System/Administration/Synaptic Package Manager:
