To add to the above: shutting down the laptop and then starting from
there in Ubuntu, as suggested in one of the workarounds above, actually
made the sound work

Audio works fine on Windows both through laptop speakers and 3.5mm jack
headphones
When booted in Ubuntu -- no sound on laptop speakers or headphones.
confirm the pavucontrol shows audio streaming.
alsamixer all outputs set to "oo
