I actually do not get the same result with totem, the speakers work
fine.
I mean, who listens to music through their PC speaker? The speakers I
have are a simple Creative Subwoofer/Two tweeter thing. Cheap but
effective.
I have a desktop as well, not a laptop.
Perhaps saying external speakers

There is no sound coming from my external PC speakers when using
Rhythmbox, all other programs I can think of to test send the sound to
the speakers. I tested in MPlayer, Audacious, Firefox, Amarok and
several others.
