Hello Bryce,
After an upgrade to Ubuntu 8.10 this problem disappeared, I don't know
if it is still an issue on 8.04 but for me it is fixed.

I don't think that the driver has reached the repositories yet, you need to
download the driver from ati but it is easy to install, just download the
package, then do
chmod a+x ati-driver-installer-8-5-x86.x86_64.run
sudo ./ati-driver-installer-8-5-x86.x86_64.run
