on a similar note, i have a similar problem in 10.10 with image
artifacting (image scroll lag?), mostly when viewing in webpages.
Im also using the nvidia package ofcourse. If you would like me to

Currently running on 10.10
Running "sudo telinit 1" places me in the recovery mode menu.
Choosing to reboot as normal and running "sudo telinit 2" from the root shell
both fail to bring up the GDM login window. (tried both separately)

are there any error logs you can post to this? try loggin in at the
text login, and run "sudo startx" . if you dont have a log file
already, that should generate one if it doesnt start the xserver for u.

Im not sure how i came across this bug thread in my search, but i was
having trouble with totem streaming divx files in firefox on build
10.10. Sometimes the videos would start to load, but most of the time
not. I came across John Rose's fix and it worked like a charm.
Just a heads up for anyone
update: after marking nvidia packages for complete remove and
reinstalling several times this now works. most likely caused by some
other setting i had, my apologies.
