Hello again, I re-read the linked bug reports and related items and I am
not sure this is a duplicate.
I have tried multiple attempts to re-install drivers, purge drivers then
re-install, reboot, etc with n
Hmm, maybe something else is going on then? I have had nvidia-driver-550
"installed" for months and many reboot cycles, it seems like it was
never loading even after re-install attempts (tried switching drivers a
few times to see if it was a driver specific problem).

Good news! That worked (below), backlight is behaving normally now.
Specifically what worked was disabling secure boot, some digging pointed
to that being a problem for loading nvidia drivers at times.
Looking at the `XorgLog.txt` I missed what presumably tipped you off?
