The fix was to upgrade to version 0.68 which is the default in Hardy, so

When BackupPC is running on an edgy ubuntu, it gives an error:
fileListReceive failed
For any edgy ubuntu clients it attempts to backup.
This is a bug in the libfile-rsyncp-perl package (upstream) and is fixed
