Tim's patch is certainly a big improvement if you set idle dimming to disabled. No more annoying dimming when you don't want it. Except when you open the gnome-power-manager preferences. Then it does seem to dim the display for some reason. Also, this bug appears to be a duplicate of bug #133057.

Anyway, the play/pause button seems to function as some kind of page-up button here (in for example firefox), the top button functions as some kind of page- down button, the next/prev buttons as right/left.
