I've encountered this bug on the past TWO kernel updates of my Xubuntu
16.04.4 (now .5) system that uses an Nvidia card. Initially I found that
falling back to the previous kernel was a satisfactory workaround. This
morning, I tried using the "Additional drivers" system setting to change

file splice in pool causes network timeout
For what it's worth, the same thing happens in Linux 3.2.0-59-generic

see if it goes farther back than that.

I first noticed this about three weeks ago while scrolling through a
large PDF file via rdesktop; finally located error messages in kern.log
today. Symptom is sudden loss of network connection. Both systems
involved must be shut down, allowed to cool for several minutes, then
I see that the fix was released almost three weeks ago, but have not yet
seen any update in my 12.04.1 LTS installation. Meanwhile the zombie
attack continues. Will there be a backport to the LTS system soon?

skipped.
The workaround is to put a "manual" mount command into the /etc/rc.local

In my case the added code was VGA=771 and the effect was to convert the
display font to unreadable garbage, not only for the text displayed
during boot but for all virtual terminals using text mode. However the
GUI on tty7 operated normally. Manually removing the VGA=771 from

I'm still affected by this bug, and have partially verified that it
still exists in the 10.04 release. I'm running 8.04.4, fully updated
(kernel is 2.6.24-28-generic), and the affected adapter is an nVidia
MCP61 Ethernet adapter on the motherboard. The lockup only happens a
short time after noon lo
