The map reading routines have been cleaned up. The biggest problems were
associated with network timeouts and file clean up. This has been fixed
in release 1.9.2

This problem has been resolved within the xastir source tree since April
2009. There is a stable release of xastir that has been available since
October. I think time would be better spent incorporating newer release
than to retrofit.
